Becoming a member of Sligo Libraries
Membership of the library service is free to all residents of Ireland. You can join at any branch of the library by presenting proof of your name and current address. You can join at any age but children and young people under the age of 18 must get the permission of a parent or guardian to join the library. Their presence will be required when collecting their Unique Sligo Library User ID.
Register online
You may join the library online by clicking on the button below after you have read and accepted the membership conditions & user policy. You can then pick up a valid Sligo library card on your next visit to your local library. Please note: You will need to bring proof of ID and evidence of address in order for us to confirm your identity. Please remember also to record and bring your temporary library card number with you for swift service.
Conditions of membership
- To borrow items you must present your library membership card.
- All items may be borrowed for three weeks.
- You may borrow up to 12 items on your card. These can be borrowed from and returned to any branch of the Library Service.
- Parents/guardians are responsible for their children in the library, and for their children’s selections and use of library materials and services, including access to the internet and online resources.
- Items may be renewed twice at any branch. Staff are happy to renew items over the telephone during opening hours, please have your library card number on hand. If a reservation has been placed on an item you have on loan a renewal is not permitted.
- Items may be returned at any branch of the Library.
- Membership may be suspended if you have lost items and outstanding charges.
- Overdue notices are a courtesy reminder for your convenience.
- You can place your own reservations for most items via the public access catalogues at our branches or through the Library Service online catalogue.
- All costs incurred by the Library due to items lost or damaged whilst in your care must be reimbursed.
- All reservation, inter-library loan and lost membership card charges are non-refundable.
- If you change your address or name please notify us immediately.
- Please report lost cards to the library immediately. You will be held responsible for any items borrowed before the loss is reported.
- Membership details are confidential and will not be disclosed to other parties.
Sligo County Library User Policy has been created to protect the rights and safety of Library members, staff and for preserving and protecting the library’s materials, equipment and facilities. Quiet and co-operative behaviour is expected at all times.
Code of Conduct:
Sligo CoCo Library Service Code of Conduct operates a Zero Tolerance Policy. All public users are expected to adhere to this Policy and it will be enforced to ensure that our customers have an enjoyable library visit.
Unacceptable Behaviour is:
The use of threatening or abusive behaviour towards customers or staff.
Partaking in any illegal activity (including false alarms to emergency services).
Damaging library property.
Entering areas of the library marked Staff Only.
Non compliance with health and safety procedures and fire drills.
Being under the influence of alcohol or substances.
Removing pages from library materials and publications.
Non-compliance to the Copyright Act 2000.
Consuming food or beverages or using tobacco products.
Using mobile telephones or any other electronic device for voice communication other than in the event of an emergency during My Open Library hours.
It is explicitly prohibited to record either audio or video on the premises.
Removing materials from the library without first checking them out.
Note: Anyone engaging in disruptive behaviour will be asked to leave the premises. Staff are instructed to call the Gardaí in the event of any of the above misdemeanours being committed. All our premises are CCTV monitored on a 24/7 basis.
